The Sucker

Cody Ryan

Folk music for a blown motor and a clean river.
Release: 20th January 2023

DESCRIPTION

The Sucker documents a cardroom pilgrimage from the American northwest to the southeast. It is a gambling album, at times ample, athletic, and thrumming—at others skinned, pallid, and swooning. It is inspired by the gambling songs of Dylan and Van Zandt, the wagers of Amarillo Slim, and the storytelling of Springstein’s Nebraska.

BACKGROUND

The Sucker took form in the summer and fall of 2020, while Ryan was living in Portland and working for a funeral home. Between shifts of driving hearses and interring the unfortunate, he would round the local card games, playing until he won enough to leave both Portland and the dead. In search of larger stakes, he set out on the road for two years, gambling his way from Texas to Florida before settling in South Carolina. It was there that the final songs of The Sucker were written. Since then, he has returned to his hometown of Albuquerque, where he continues to play poker full- time.
